MOUNT DESERT, April 14, 2025 - On my many long drives to Maine, audio books have become a great savior and companion, especially because it only takes about 45 minutes before NPR begins to repeat itself.
I heartily recommend you broaden your geographic preferences to include Vermont in order not to miss one of my all time favorite authors, Howard Frank Mosher who unfortunately has died. Among his legacy are WAITING FOR TEDDY WILLIAMS, one of the funniest creations I've ever encountered, and STRANGER IN THE KINGDOM, one of the most carefully woven! Like Faulkner, he has created mythic generations of re-appearing characters, who pop-up in startlingly near cinematic situations. The Northern Kingdom stars as backdrop for many.
As a bookstore clerk, I met him on several occasions, and was mightily impressed by his artiulate sense of humor, humble demeanor, and geniality. Lynne Birlem
Thanks for the list. You and others might enjoy Lewis Robinson's Officer Friendly, a great set of short stories about Maine.
Thanks! Fwiw, here is my list of my favorite books about Maine:
