It has been heartening to see the slow-but-sure increase in the number of year-round businesses. Hearty thanks to all these community-minded businesses: not only do you serve the community, but you keep people employed year-round. I would add three to your list: Mother's Kitchen in Town Hill, Sassafras Cafe, also in Town Hill, and The Natural History Center, who offers private nature and adventure tours year-round.
Numbers down in the tourist invasion more locals can access the businesses. Those of us on the quiet side would enjoy frequenting their businesses, but they’ve made it impossible. There are 10+ thousand people living on this island year round - every day!! Why not seek our custom ?
I am an old friend of Jeff Young. Like so many who grew up on Mount Desert Island and environ, Jeff is -and always has been- a very conscientious worker and then employer of many. I know him as a perceptive, tolerant and engagingly kind man. Sharing common sense when it may not be immediately available is perhaps a trait that some find mettlesome, but his choice to enjoy some downtime in a favorable climate -or anywhere else- is simply none of our business.
It's the public's business when he and his hired minions try their best at influencing public opinion to his own pecuniary benefit. It's the public's business when he is an elected member of the Warrant Committee. This was an article praising the citizens who actually are trying to restore the village to its previous glory. Bar Harbor is a town with takers and givers. Apparently he ain't a giver ... nice try.
Thank you for highlighting the places that remain open in the winter months! They are doing an enormous community service, and we need more of them! Please keep in mind Reel Pizza (my favorite place of all) and the new Sassafrass Cafe in Town Hill.
Those were two big oversights on my part. Thanks for mentioning. I've never been to Sassafrass. Will make a point of partaking as long as they allow this loud blogger to set foot in the place...
Well my eyes were opened to MDI in the winter. Glad to hear that a little life is coming back. I'll have to check into it. I shall ignore all the empty houses in my neighborhood. After all I do live on an island.
I appreciate this list! It’s great to know Milagro Coffee is open in the winter!
I would like to say, though, that unlike many businesses that close or even those that stay open in winter, the Kelly sisters are the heart of the Lompoc and work nearly every night while it is open. I think Megan Kelly is going to be a great asset to the town council and I imagine she will be a voice for locals, not just business owners.
Don't forget to mention Stephen Coston's 2 businesses that are still open all winter, Inn on Mount Desert and Pathmaker Hotel. He cares about year round employees.
Thanks Mr. Millstein for this report. We, who are here for the winter, need to support all local business that make this investment to serve our community to be open. They are here to serve & We to support them! Many of forget That we all serve others! And we need to Thankful & Supportive, working together and helping, giving, sharing and sometime compromising to make things work for all!

Maybe if they can get the swarm

Thank you! I really appreciate your comment. I have a lot more to say, but I will choose to keep it to myself.

I hope you are right. This council could use a voice for the residents.

Hotels are not gathering spots for locals, unless they have a restaurant.
