There are many questions to be asked here: 1) Who will contact Bar Harbor’s skilled Code Enforcement Department to assess if there are any violations of vacation rental regulations? I know many residents of Bar Harbor who depend on their few licensed VR’s to allow them to continue to live on the Island. They are honorable about striving to abide by the rules, not avoid them. 2) Lincoln raises a concerning question: If you have a permitted dwelling unit in one or more of Bar Harbor’s zones that allow motels/hotels and other transient accommodations can you now just convert it from a typically private dwelling to an accommodation to rent out on a nightly basis? 3) At the recent Planning Board meeting there was minimal discussion about exactly what Destination Health had received site plan approval for their original permit. As a lay member of the public, I realized I would have to research the records to even begin to understand how the Planning Department and Planning Board chose to address how the public could be informed about DH’ s significant changes to the use of their property for profits and possibly skirt around rules at the expense of a major commercial and residential part of Bar Harbor. Thank you QJ for doing your journalistic duty in our democracy...informing the public.
