BREAKING NEWS: SWH voters accept land for Chris's Pond, adopt all articles in town meeting
SOUTHWEST HARBOR, May 2, 2023 - An overwhelming majority of residents said yay in a voice vote to accept donation of land from Maine Coast Heritage Trust at the annual town meeting last night to enable the town to seek grants to upgrade its beloved skating pond.
All 49 articles were approved, said Town Clerk Jennifer Lahaye. At least 143 voters were registered, “likely more,” she stated. Lahaye will finalize the count today.
The project received unanimous approval at the June 2021 town meeting attended by 104 voters which allowed MCHT to first acquire the abutting properties.
The land would enable better access to Chris’s Pond by expanding its parking lot and provide more recreational space.
Voters also approved Article 49 to rejoin Acadia Disposal District :
“To see if the town will authorize the Select Board to sign an interlocal agreement to make the town a member of the Acadia Disposal District. The Acadia Disposal District is a nonprofit, non-taxable, quasi-municipal corporation organized to coordinate waste disposal for the member communities. Each member town will have one voting director on the board of directors that will manage this corporation.”
Other members include Tremont and Mount Desert.
Last night’s town meeting was moved from Pemetic School, which had a power outage, to the firehouse.
