BREAKING NEWS: Tremont votes to join Southwest Harbor police
TREMONT, May 15, 2024 - Voters Tuesday night at town meeting overwhelmingly approved a proposal to hire police from its next door neighbor to replace its 30-week part-time services from the Hancock County Sheriff’s department. The vote was 102-19.
“The town wants to have 24 hour, 7 day coverage,” one resident said. “That doesn't mean SW will be patrolling Tremont all day, but they will respond to any and all calls for help, and they are near enough to get here quickly.”
Voters agreed to pay SWH about $400,000 a year for police coverage. It had been paying about $150,000 for sheriffs but they rarely exceeded 30 hours a week in patrolling inside town borders, according to the town manager.
