BREAKING NEWS: Tremont anti-campground petitioners win special meeting
TREMONT, July 10, 2021 - The petitioners for a moratorium on campground approval have achieved the first step toward their goal of placing the question on a townwide referendum Nov. 2.
Town Manager Jesse Dunbar posted notice Monday that the petitioners have been certified and a special select board meeting has been called for Aug. 23 at 5 p.m. to consider putting it on the Nov. 2 warrant. The special meeting was needed because the next regular select board meeting isn’t until Sept. 7, beyond the 60-day requirement to get on the town warrant.
The petition signed by 177 voters seeks to freeze all campground application activity for at least six months to allow the town to mull over confusing zoning ordinances which allow commercial activity inside residential neighborhoods.
On Aug. 24, the owners of Acadia Wilderness Lodge will appear before the Planning Board to continue a public hearing on its application for a 154-site, 72 RV campground in West Tremont which has drawn the ire of residents.
Since the last hearing Acadia has promised residents it would cut back the number of camp sites - luxury yurts - and eliminate RVs.
Some residents maintain that this is a significant change from the original application and that the process should restart with a new application required by the planning board.
