SOUTHWEST HARBOR, June 11, 2023 - Police halted all traffic on Rt. 102 from the Somesville fire station to Echo Lake today starting around noon after a body was discovered between the Smuggler’s Den campground and the IGA grocery store, officials said.
As of 8 p.m. the road was still closed. Southbound traffic was directed to take the circuitous road around the island through Tremont.
Some traffic managed to save time by going on Seal Cove Road.
Officials said it was an “unintended death.” One park ranger described it as a crime, as opposed to an overdose.
Many businesses in Southwest Harbor and Tremont were disrupted by the detours which last most of Sunday, the first weather friendly day in about a week.
State police is heading up the investigation.
That geography doesn’t make sense. Fire station to Echo lake is well north of the IGA.
