BREAKING NEWS: Marathon founder charged with violating protection order
Race planner promises no interruption to annual MDI event
MOUNT DESERT, Oct. 12, 2023 - Gary Allen, founder of the celebrated MDI marathon, was released from Hancock County jail in Ellsworth this week after being charged with violating the protection order of a Tremont woman on Oct. 5.
Mary Ropp, principal coordinator of the marathon, which will mark its 20th anniversary Sunday, said the event is “business as usual” and that she is looking forward to a “beautiful weather forecast” for this weekend.
Allen, 66, was taken into custody last Friday morning by Bar Harbor officer Lukas Keene, who reported, “On October 6th at approximately 0946 I arrested Gary Allen for violating a protection order that occurred on October 5th.”
On Tuesday, Allen was back on social media promoting the marathon after his four-day absence.
Allen has been heralded for creating one of the most original running events of its kind featuring Acadia National Park as a backdrop.
In very poor taste and irresponsible to write plaudits on Gary Allen who abuses women and is a nuisance and more in the MDI community
Many of us have learned that an artist or athlete we admired was a predator. It's a process. I blogged about a recent experience I had learning that Russell Brand, a witty comedian and podcaster and spokesperson for the recovery movement, was an alleged serial predator and rapist. https://carolyngage.weebly.com/blog/september-25th-2023
