SOUTHWEST HARBOR, May 1, 2024 - The Northern Light Health Center on Herrick Road will close and be moved to Ellsworth in August, a center employee who answered phone confirmed.
“Because of continued staffing challenges and the high cost of facility maintenance and improvements, combining our current Southwest Harbor services with Ellsworth makes the most sense,” said Joe Gaetano, vice president operations for Northern Light Blue Hill and Maine Coast Hospitals, told the Islander.
Several readers lamented the closing on social media saying this was another example of the decline of essential services on the island.
Northern Light will offer its nine employees here opportunities in its network.
Mount Desert Hospital operates a separate medical clinic near Carroll’s Drug in the village center.
Some day the island folks will come around and see the damage their weekly rentals are doing to this place. No medical care nearby might help, this after no plumbers, no electricians, nobody to actually clean the weekly rentals, nobody to teach the kids, nobody to drive the kids to school etc. Making money is most important.
“Breaking” 🤣 Hardly
